I’m not here to tell you that Volodymyr Zelensky is a perfect Democratic leader. Or that Ukraine is an excellent democratic country. But he appears to be more committed to the independence of his nation and it’s democratic direction than his own ideology or his own power. Which is more than I can say for a great many leaders in the world based on thier actions. He is facing a real existential crisis to his country.
Unfortunately, we’ve screwed this up so bad that perhaps all we can hope for is negotiating as much territory back for Ukraine as possible, if possible. Ukraine may keep fighting, and we could help them. But I’m not certain at this point that that would lead to any better result for us or more importantly for Ukraine. NATO membership is a long term goal, not a short term one. Ukraine may keep fighting anyway. It’s their country. They should be at the table. Any other position is reminiscent of failed ideas of territorial spoils and conquest. Ideas that have intensified conflict, not reduced them in the long run.
Importantly, we should find ways to increase deterrence and prevent Putin’s continued push westward. There is no question that that is what he wants to do one way or another. This places Eastern Europe in danger. And one only need to look at the 20th century to know that that places a risk to all of us.
